I know some people who would like to meat marxman.

But seriously folks,
I use masks a ton and they are great, But nothing can beat the idiot tool for primary selections.

9 hours???
Dude.
Seriously.
It does NOT take 9 hours to complete a decent chop.
Shocked
Well, maybe for you it does.

Here is a great tutorial for the pen tool:

http://www.thegoldenmean.com/technique/pen1.html

and I QUOTE from this source:

Quote:

I hope to shed some light on the Pen Tool and dispel some of the myth because this really is an industrial strength power tool. I’ll admit that when I’m evaluating a fresh–eyed art school graduate who struggles to make a selection with the Magic Wand when the Pen Tool could do the job better in a fraction of the time, it just screams to me — “no real–world experience!”. Get friendly with this tool.

...the pen tool is unsurpassed for two things: precise, sharp edged selections, and Clipping Paths.

Another educational source for all kinds of selection methods, including pen tool and masking:
Katrin Eismann's Photoshop Masking and Compositing - outstanding book. Chapter four is devoted to the pen tool

Thanks Evelyn,
I joke when I say to throw away the magic wand tool. It is a wonderful tool in the hands of a skilled photoshopper, but in the wrong hands it's a sloppy tool. If you truly understand how it works and know it's downfalls it can be very useful. The quote you posted was pretty true to how I feel.

Kind of like Marx-Man. He seems like a useless tool but I'm sure he is very usefull sometimes. Wink

I agree...if you can really understand it's shortcomings as well as it's benefits...it can be quite useful at times.
