Yes, Arc...but do you not see that it is a difficult assignment? It's difficult for those of us who work in the industry. And now...I wonder if this teacher's responsible for the free-form (read blobby) logos of the past years.

It´s still HER assignment... can you picture a med student having an experienced surgeon to make his surgeries when HE was supposed to acquire the skills?

Hard to explain as im not a teacher or sthg...but u have to know that shapes that are drawn and empty spaces are equally important... it can tell a story just with the balance in the image.
Most of shapes that could be labelled as "abstract" exist yet in nature, but human brain synthetisize (????engl) most of them....and/or absorb them unconsciously....
Logos , just like big inventions actually, draw their shapes from nature, life..... a plane from a bird.... a ...
Squares doesn't exist in nature, neither triangles...these are the visual result of maths.
but maths are made to understand" the nature.
Finally i could say that i personnaly tend to create "new" shapes better than using well known shapes (like pop art would do) , though i spent hours at school doing wellknown shapes, cool tattoos on my desks (yea, maybe u know these good old wood desks) until i dsicover i could invent by myself one day...but still it is an extension of existing shapes...combined...melted....disturbed...to create anothers.
