Ok, who'da thunk something so simple could get so coomplicated.
So we just let everyone who wants to, play, and when there's an odd one out then the highest voted remaining loser can get a second chance.
People would have to like that.

we are working out a way that everyone who enters gets to play in the 1st round, then the highest scores go into the brackets

this really has to be drummed into everyone, and more importantly any newbie who has joined in the last month or 2 or so, many may be either wondering what the hells going on, or just not aware that this is going on at all.
